Ice Cream Soda Club 2024

Join me and hundreds of others as we sew Ice Cream Soda together in 2024.

Ice Cream Soda has been my most popular pattern since I first released it in 2017, and you can see why. It's so beautiful and simple and unique. It suits a complex, fussy-cutting bonanza or a more simple, subdued palette. It's a great quilt for busting out your scraps or using your favourite fabric collection.

Make the quilt

YOU want to make.

Sometimes quilts come easy, and you can hardly believe you've finished it already. Other times they stall, and you can't quite figure out why the motivation waned.

In the Ice Cream Soda Club, I'll guide you through the process of making a beautiful quilt you love to make and love to own. Do you need a quilt that's going to stretch and engage you? Or some easy and comforting stitching that supports your current season? Learn to understand the ways you like to make, or need to make right now, and plan your Ice Cream Soda quilt to suit you.

There's no race or strict time schedule. You can finish the quilt at the suggested rate or make at your own pace. We'll focus on tuning into your preferred workflow, your headspace, and the colours and approach that make you happy. And, then we'll enjoy regular check-ins as we stitch our blocks; growing together in permission, confidence and joy.

The first club email officially goes out on January 15, but in the meantime I'll send some helpful resources for choosing the right size version of the quilt for you, tips for brushing up your EPP skills, and some general inspiration! I can't wait to stitch with you.

Choose Fabric

to make a quilt you love

Once we decide how we want our Ice Cream Soda Quilt to look and feel, AND how we want to feel while making it, it's time to take a look at our fabric! Learn more about contrast, value, colour, pattern scale, and fussy cutting then use these tools to play with your blocks.

In the Ice Cream Soda club, we'll learn by doing. Our aim is not perfection, but confidence. We'll grow in confidence by trying things out, making blocks we like, and some that we don't, and steadily steering our quilt to what we want it to be.

Sew together

Janurary to July 2024

We're going to start the sew along on January 15, 2024 with weekly emails through to the end of January. These emails will help you plan your quilt and get started.

From February 12, I'll send a monthly 'check-in' until July. In these emails we'll explore the place of creativity in our lives, the need to make space for ourselves (and ways to do so), the essential value of joy, and why we are worth its pursuit.

My goal for the Ice Cream Soda Club is to help you not just make a quilt you love, but to use it as a stepping stone towards a greater sense of permission and confidence as we welcome more beauty and joy into our lives in 2024.

Sew along in 2024!

In 2024, I'll be hosting my best club yet - the Ice Cream Soda club. Together we'll tune in to the kind of quilt we'd love to make, and what suits out current season, our routines, our personality. You'll focus less on scheduling your blocks and more on finding a stitching rhythm that suits you. And then you'll use that foundation to make a quilt you love, all the while learning more about colour, contrast, pattern and print scale.

FAQs

Nope! You can sign up to receive regular emails with tips, tricks, and encouragement in your pursuit of joy and creativity this year. If at any time you decide you'd like to make your own Ice Cream Soda quilt, you can find everything you need here.

The small block uses smaller shapes and the large block uses larger shapes. They have slightly different layouts and finishing sizes. There is a whole comparison post with lots more details here.

We're not going to focus on how many blocks per month to make. BUT, if you want to finish in the given Club period use the following as a guide:

Small Block Version:

  • make 12 whole blocks per month from January through May
  • make 8 whole blocks and 8 half blocks in June
  • add joining shapes and sew quilt top together in July

Large Block Version:

  • make 8 whole blocks per month form January through May
  • make 6 whole blocks and 6 half blocks in June
  • add joining shapes and sew quilt top together in July

Yes! The blocks come together easily and it's great for discovering how you like fabrics to play together.

Because we aim to ship items as fast as we possibly can, we are unable to change your order once it's placed. So, please double check everything carefully, and thank you for helping us ensure fast shipping!

Yes, we ship worldwide with tracking.

Yes! However, we ship all items via standard international shipping when a free shipping code is used.

Yes, you should be able to!

No, but we do have some lovely fabric bundles in the shop while supplies last! One high volume bundle should work for the small block version, but it would be more of a starter pack for the large version.

Fabric needed for the Ice Cream Soda blocks will depend a lot on whether you fussy cut or use strip cutting for your shapes.

Small block version:

If you're buying a collection, and strip cutting, you could use 24 fat quarters for this quilt. If fussy cutting, buy half yards to get more repeats in the cut.

  • 2 yards background fabric for joining pieces (additional 1 1/4 yd for optional 5" border)
  • 2/3 yard for binding
  • 4 yards for backing (or 4 1/2 yards with optional border)
  • Wadding/batting: 66" × 66" (or 76" × 76" with optional border)

Large block version:

If you're buying a collection, and strip cutting, you could use 28 fat quarters for this quilt. If fussy cutting, buy half yards to get more repeats in the cut.

  • 1 1/2 yards background fabric for joining pieces (additional 1 1/3 yd for optional "5 border)
  • 2/3 yard for binding
  • 4 1/2 yards for backing (or 6 yards with optional border, when pieced with a vertical seam)
  • Wadding/batting: 73" × 82" (or 83" × 92" with optional border)

We've edited last year's Hexie Harvest Group to "Tales of Cloth Sew Alongs". You can join and share your progress here!

The Instagram hashtag #icecreamsodaquilt is wonderful for sharing and inspiration alike! We will choose photos from the hashtag periodically and share them in the Club newsletter.

We held a giveaway for everyone who signs up for the club during the Black Friday weekend, but after that, no.
